Hi! My name is Velvet and I am fundraising for the Roots Organisation in Siam Reap, Cambodia. Roots Cambodia was founded in 2018 by Sarou Hong. Situated less than 11 miles from Siem Reap (home of the world-famous Angkor Wat), Roots Cambodia provides free English classes to over 100 students. After becoming an English teacher, Sarou changed career paths, becoming an experienced tour guide taking groups from around Southeast Asia. Realising tourism’s endless opportunities, Sarou founded Roots Cambodia to provide those same opportunities for the children in rural Cambodia. Sarou runs this small but amazing school on the land behind his property and it provides a safe and happy place to learn English for many children in his village.

I had the privilege of teaching these children whilst I was visiting Cambodia. They were the most beautiful, gentle, kind-hearted and grateful children and they were so excited to learn. This fundraiser is to support Sarou and his team to be able to build further facilities, such as a classroom, safe drinking water, a vegetable garden and a toileting facility. It also supports them to provide resources for students such as books, paper, pencils, clothing, workbooks, stationary, backpacks and other resources that we all take for granted.

Any donation is deeply appreciated by Sarou and his amazing community. You will absolutely be changing lives by supporting Roots Organisation, Cambodia.

” This is a wonderful endeavor and cause. Sarou is an amazing soul who is devoted to his village and upliftment of young people by providing resources for their education. I hope to give again.”- Mandy

Hi, my name is Carmel
Sarou, in the cover picture with me, was our guide on a recent holiday to Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand and an excellent host he was , but that’s another story.
Sarou comes from a very small village in Cambodia, his family are farmers and live a very simple, meagre life. He works hard to support his sons, his mother, his sister and his widowed sister in law and her children. In addition to providing for his extended family, Sarou looks after his village and does whatever he can to make their life better. Before Sarou became a tour guide he was a teacher. He worked hard to put himself and his sister through university. Not many Cambodians have that opportunity.
One project that he has taken on is a school that he has set up on his mothers land. He has built and funded this himself, with no help from govt authorities.
As you can see from the photographs the school is but a shack and it has little in the way of basic school necessities. But the children are so happy there and were excited to show off their English language skills to us when we visited.
We had the honour of visiting his house and his mother cooked for us. There we met his large family and also some of his students and a volunteer teacher. He was very proud to show us his school and the school “yard” which has swings and a volley ball court.
So to the point if this post, and thank you for reading this far.
Basic school essentials are very lacking in the school. Items such as copies, books, pencils, etc are expensive and hard to come by. So, I am collecting these essentials to send in to the school.
What I looking to buy for the school is English school books (used are fine), children’s reading books (soft covers please), copies, pens, pencils, erasers, teaching posters eg alphabets etc
